The Vampire Diaries’ cast stopped by the press room at Comic-Con to dish on Elena’s transformation, inter-personal relationships and a trip to the dark side in season 4. We chatted with executive producers Julie Plec and stars Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev, Michael Trevino, Steven R. McQueen and Zach Roerig about next season.
Elena’s Transformation. Plec explained that they wanted Elena’s transformation into a vampire to be earned, which is why it didn’t happen earlier in the series. There was simply too much character development that needed to take place before she went on this particular journey. The season 4 premiere of The Vampire Diaries (which picks up a few hours after the events of the season 3 finale) will see the group exhausting every possible opportunity to save Elena from becoming a vampire. The outcome of that quest will set the stage going forward. Meanwhile, Dobrev likened the transformation into a vampire to puberty. Because emotions are heightened, Elena will experience a lot of emotional swings, from extreme sadness to extreme happiness.

Here are some highlights from the sexy and often hilarious panel:
-Talking about the fourth season, Plec says, “One of the greatest things that we discovered while putting stories together is that everything feels fresh. There’s this wonderful core of character. ” We can expect “a lot of deep emotional and twisted stuff” as they enter their senior year of high school.
-Now that Elena is a vampire things are going to be a bit different for Dobrev. She says, “It’s going to be tricky and I’m going to be discovering it as I go along. She is going to be defined by her experiences.”
-Paul enjoyed playing ‘bad’ Stefan. “When I got to play the ripper season 3, it was a relief in some way. He was so good to a flaw…” that he really felt that his personality couldn’t be real.
-Plec says that Matt Davis does contractually have permission from his new show, Cult, to come back to The Vampire Diaries for some episodes and that obviously the whole cast would love to have him back.
-Steven R. McQueen was hilarious throughout the panel cracking jokes in response to most questions. He told the crowd his favorite episode from last year was episode 10 because he got to use a crossbow and chop someone’s head off.
-Dobrev loved the underwater scenes she shot for the finale saying “you feel like you’re in a big action movie” and remarked that she “felt like a badass doing it.”
-Julie’s favorite scene to watch from last season was the candelight vigil for Alaric because “I loved it as a character goodbye but also loved what each of these guys brought into it.”
-When asked to tell us one thing about each panelist that we don’t know about, Julie Plec gave the following descriptions: Steven is “a goofball with a heart of gold.” Zach has grown up into a “true man and a true, true soul and hunts turkeys” Paul is “the funniest person I’ve ever met.” Nina is “going to rule the universe.” Ian has done more things than any person ever joking that “I think at one point he sat down with Jesus Christ.” Michael is one of the most loyal people I’ve ever met.
-As Elena and Katherine, Dobrev says she “feel like I’ve made out with everyone in the cast.” If she could choose someone she hasn’t yet kissed, she thinks that Katherine should make out with Elijah. Roering joked that he and Sherrif Forbes should get together.
-It was hard for the cast member to figure out what the worst part of their job is but Michael Trevino went so far to say the best and worst part of it is the “cookies.” While they’re delicious, needing to take your shirt off all the time requires you to resist and how much does that suck?

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS ON THE SEASON FINALE OF TVD…. DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED!!
This is it, Vampire Diaries fans…the season finale. It’s been a pretty good season, hasn’t it? What with the Originals taking center stage and the introduction of Klaus’ siblings and child-killing mother. Then there was Stefan, who went from good boy to bad boy back to slightly good boy again. And, of course, there’s the fact that Stefan’s absence caused Damon and Elena to grow closer together. Producer Julie Plec has said that Elena will choose between one of the brothers by the end of the season, so place your bets on which Salvatore she’ll pick.
The season finale of The Vampire Diaries will be airing on May 11. We’ll be flashing back to a time when Elena and Jeremy’s parents were alive, finally introducing us to her parents, Grayson (guest star Jason MacDonald) and Miranda (guest star Erin Beute). And guess what other deceased character will be returning for the finale? None other than Aunt Jenna (guest star Sara Canning), who was cruelly killed during Klaus’ attempts for more power. We’ll even see Elena during her relationship with Matt, back when the guys she dated didn’t kill anyone (that we know of).
A lot of characters are going to have to face difficult choices in the finale. Both Caroline and Tyler will have to make a big decision, while Bonnie chooses to make a secret deal that causes a lot of heartbreak.

The Vampire Diaries Sneak Peek: Klaus Visits the Gilbert House…for a Doppelganger
Esther had her own plans for the Decade Dance in this week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries and they involved turning Alaric into a vampire in order to make him an unstoppable vampire hunter. But Alaric seemingly ruined her plan when he killed her before completing the process to become a vampire. While he said goodbye to all of his friends and was prepared to die, Bonnie interrupted that plan by force-feeding him blood while in a trance, thus making him into a vampire.
In next week’s episode, Klaus wants to get out of Mystic Falls now that Alaric has become a serious threat. But before he goes, he wants to take Elena so he can have access to her blood. But when he drops by the Gilbert house to announce that he’s taking the doppelganger, the Salvatores mount a plan to stop him from hurting her.
Watch a sneak peek below for the May 3 episode of The Vampire Diaries, airing at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
